11/26 - 2:15pm - Rainy Start to the Week, Severe to the Southwest

Had enough of the rain in Starkville this morning and afternoon? Just wait, there's more! An area of moist air ahead of a cold front that will move through tonight is inspiring the development of numerous showers and those will eventually lead to some thunderstorms late tonight. Some of the storms to our southwest could be severe but it's looking more and more like we won't have quite enough moisture and instability to get that kind of storm activity closer to the Golden Triangle. A Slight Risk of severe weather has been issued for areas west of I-55 due to the possibility for severe storms toward Jackson and Vicksburg. Once the cold front sweeps through tonight it'll leave us with cloudy skies for a good chunk of the day tomorrow before things clear out for Wednesday and Thursday.

The weekend will feature some clouds and possibly a shower here and there but overall we'll be seeing one warm end to the month of November as temperatures get close to and surge past 70 degrees! Check out the video below for your detailed CampusConnect forecast.

9/4 - 12:30pm - Yesterday's GMWT Video, TS Lee Update

Yesterday we began airing Good Morning West Tennessee for an additional hour starting at 8am. This means the Saturday show is now two hours, from 6-7am and again at 8-9am with Good Morning America airing in between. The forecast for West Tennessee still looks very wet today into tomorrow because of Tropical Storm Lee, but I think the rain should clear out as Labor Day rolls along. Check out some video from yesterday's broadcast below:

Lee is just hanging on to tropical storm status and should be downgraded to a depression later today as it moves inland. Just because it's weakening doesn't mean the risks from it will go away. Portions of Central Mississippi (I'm talking to you Starkville), Alabama, and even up through the Appalachian Mountains in North Carolina could see over eight inches of rain between now and Tuesday. Flooding is obviously a concern, so use caution while driving in these areas. Turn around, don't drown!

Tornadoes are also continuing a problem with Lee. There were 10 reports of tornadoes yesterday, some causing damage, along the Gulf Coast from Louisiana to Florida. Two tornado watches are in effect with about a half dozen warnings in them from Mississippi to Florida. The tornado risk from Lee should lessen as it continues to come onshore tonight and tomorrow.

1/26 - 4pm - MSU Forecast Video

Looks like this weekend is going to be one of reprieve after starting out with clouds and rain across North Mississippi. Expect temperatures near 60 by the weekend and no rain chances until early next week. Check out my video below for more details:

11/30 - 4pm - MSU Forecast Video / Severe Weather Aftermath

An EF2 tornado touched down in Starkville last night according to the National Weather Service in Jackson. Mobile homes, roofs of buildings, gas stations, and street signs were all damaged in this tornado that came through just after the 11:00 hour last night. I have a picture of the damage from a mobile home park here in Starkville in my forecast video below along with the full text of the NWS damage survey below that. Forecast-wise this week here in North Mississippi, we should be clear and cool with no more severe weather on the way:

11/9 - 6pm - MSU Video Forecast... With New Intro!

Sunny skies, warm temperatures, and overall pleasant conditions will be the rule over the next few days in Starkville as high pressure continues to dictate our weather. The next chance of rain will happen on Saturday into Sunday as a cold front passes through the region and more rain is expected early next week as well. If you're headed out to Tuscaloosa, AL for the Mississippi State vs. Alabama football game this weekend, you'll want to take a raincoat because there is a chance of rain in the forecast that evening. Check out my forecast below, which features a brand new video intro that I put together over the weekend:

9/28 - 5pm - MSU Forecast Video

With not a drop of rain in the forecast, it looks to be a very pleasant week here in Mississippi!

6/15 - 10am CDT - Hello from the Florida Gulf Coast!

After four fun days of camping in the Tennessee heat at the Bonnaroo Music Festival, I'm glad to report that I've made it to Grayton Beach, Florida! I'll be here all this week on vacation and it'll for sure be a great time.

So far no tar balls or oil has come ashore in this area, which is sandwiched between Panama City and Destin, Florida. The computer forecast models for this oil spill are bringing some oil pretty close to shore this week, but hopefully it will be far enough away for the beaches to stay open.

4/20 - 5pm - MSU Video Forecast

We're happy to have the sunshine return today after a dreary period of weather yesterday. More turbulent weather is on the way for the later part of the week, including a chance for some severe weather on Saturday. Right now it appears as if the greatest risk for severe weather will be from the Alabama/Mississippi state line to Arkansas and Louisiana.. The main threats will be high wind and hail, but tornadoes cannot be ruled out as well. I'll have more on this chance for severe weather as it develops!

It's hard to believe that there are only 17 days until I leave for my storm chasing trip!

4/18 - 2:30pm - MSU 7-Day Forecast

We're in for a bit of a roller coaster this week with a mix of sunshine, clouds, and storms. Temperatures will range from the upper 60's to the lower 80's for highs and lows should take a tumble into the 40's temporarily. Severe weather may become an issue on Friday or Saturday because of high atmospheric instability, dewpoints, and shear during that time. We'll keep an eye on it!

19 days left until I leave for my month-long storm chasing trip!

4/11 - 1:30pm - MSU 7 Day Forecast

I don't think you can really say anything bad about this week's forecast! High pressure will stay in place for the week, meaning we'll keep the sunny skies and temperatures near 80.

Only 26 days until I leave for my storm chasing trip! I'll be joining Storm Chasing Adventure Tours in Amarillo, TX as a tour guide and technology assistant on May 8th. Be sure to check out my storm chasing blog from May 8th to June 5th!

4/6 - 5pm - MSU Forecast Video

We may see some severe weather late tomorrow night in Starkville as a cold front makes its way across Mississippi. The main threats will be large hail and wind, but I would not rule out an isolated tornado or two. The rest of the week will be cooler, but at least the rain will be out of here!

Don't forget to tune in to The Weather Channel this evening at 8/7c to see my Aurora, NE tornado footage on Storm Stories. One of our tour guests who was on our chase that day will be interviewed as well. Should be a great look back at my first tornado intercept!

4/4 - 10pm - MSU 7-Day Forecast

Hope everyone had a wonderful Easter weekend! It looks like we're in for back-to-back good weather weeks here as high pressure again takes control across the Southeast. The only chance of rain in the near future looks to be on Thursday morning, but that should taper off by the afternoon. The rest of the week looks sunny and warm!

On Tuesday April 6th at 8pm/7pm central, some of my footage from the June 2009 Aurora, NE tornado will air on "Storm Stories" on The Weather Channel. This show is a part of Tornado Week. I'm not sure how much or or little of the footage will air, but I do know that one of our tour guests was interviewed on-camera for this episode. In any case I will record the episode and upload the parts that our chase group is featured in. Should be fun to see how The Weather Channel edited the video from all the different chasers together!

3/28 - 2pm - MSU 7-Day Forecast

The swings in temperature last week forced many here in Starkville to switch from shorts to blue jeans and back to shorts again. Luckily, temperatures should be more stable this week with less rain and sunny skies! I'm thinking that we could reach 80 degrees here on Friday, which is a welcome summer preview. Our next appreciable chance for rain will happen as a system comes through near end of next weekend.

A friend of mine found this fortune in her fortune cookie at lunch yesterday:

The funny thing is that it was 70 and sunny yesterday, so the fortune was right!

3/23 - 5pm - MSU Forecast Video

After a dreary, cold day yesterday, we're enjoying sunshine and warm temperatures around Starkville! Temperatures in the mid 70's are possible tomorrow, but some storms are in the forecast for Thursday. Spring has certainly sprung!

Sunday, March 21, 2010

3/21 - 10pm - MSU 7-Day Forecast

A few snowflakes may fall across North Mississippi tonight, but I don't expect any accumulations as temperatures will stay above freezing. A few rain or snow showers will pop up tomorrow through the afternoon, with highs near 50. The rest of the week looks pretty good, with temperatures near 70 and periods of clouds, sun, and maybe some storms thrown in.

3/7 - 2pm - A Warm 7-Day Forecast!

It is absolutely gorgeous outside, so go outside and enjoy it! We should see a repeat of this warm, sunny weather tomorrow with temperatures making it up to 70 degrees. Storms should fire up on Tuesday and Wednesday as a couple low pressure systems make their way across the country to our north. Some of the storms on Wednesday could be strong to severe, so keep an eye out for any watches or warnings that may be issued. We'll clear things out on Thursday before rain chances go up for Friday and the weekend.

2/28 - 3pm - MSU 7-Day Forecast

It may feel nice outside today but the chill will be back in Starkville for most of the week, along with some rain tomorrow. After an area of low pressure exits off the East Coast on Tuesday, we should clear out the clouds and precipitation. The rest of the week looks sunny and temperatures should slowly creep upward to near 60 by Friday.

Other than some possible light snow in Georgia and South Carolina on Tuesday, along with more snow in the Mid Atlantic and Northeast, the national weather picture this week shouldn't be too far from the ordinary.

Tuesday, February 23, 2010

2/23 - 5pm - MSU Forecast Video

Snow showers may mix in with light rain tonight as a disturbance from Texas makes its way through North Mississippi. We should clear out tomorrow and Thursday, but another question mark looms for Friday as either rain or snow could fall throughout the area. Right now I'm not expecting any accumulating snow, but be sure keep up with the latest forecasts!

2/21 - 3pm - MSU 7-Day Forecast

We officially made it to 70 degrees today at MSU before the clouds began to set in. Some showers and a few storms are on the way for later this afternoon and this evening, which should decrease temperatures quite a bit. A few areas of light rain could stick around until the morning, but otherwise we should clear out tomorrow. An area of low pressure off the Gulf coast will spread rain and snow showers northward into Mississippi on Wednesday, but I don't think it will get far enough north to affect us. Temperatures will dip down into the 40's from Tuesday through Thursday, but we should recover into the 50's by the end of the week.

2/14 - 2:30pm - MSU 7-Day Forecast... More Snow?

Happy Valentine's Day! It looks like we have another shot at some snow overnight tonight and into the early morning hours of tomorrow. All of North Mississippi is under a Winter Weather Advisory tonight and tomorrow as 1 to 2 inches of snow falls across the region after transitioning from a bit of rain. Another hazard with this system is the possibility for ice on the roads tomorrow morning as the wet roads flash freeze in temperatures around the mid 20's. Keep this in mind tomorrow as you're making your morning commute. The rest of the week should be fairly dry with warmer weather by Thursday. Rain is in the forecast for next weekend.

A lengthy winter storm is getting ready to affect Northern Kentucky and Southern Indiana this evening, including the Louisville area. From tonight through Wednesday, the folks back home could pick up over a half a foot of snow. Louisville has already broken their seasonal average snow total, so this storm will only add to an above-average season. Some areas up there could pick up a foot of snow!
