5/6 - 5pm - Want Sunshine? Wait Until Next Week.

The spotty showers coming through right now extend all the way to Paducah, so I think rain will be possible through the mid evening hours today. We should dry out a bit tonight and tomorrow morning, but a chance of thunderstorms is on-tap for tomorrow afternoon. The SPC has put us in a SLIGHT Risk (15%) for severe storms tomorrow:

Instability won't be too strong tomorrow, so expect some wind-driven thunderstorms to fire up in the afternoon. This threat may be enhanced if we see more sunshine than expected. Speaking of sunshine, where is it!? It's on the way for early next week, but I think there may be a few peeks of sun here and there between now and then.

Friday probably won't see much in the way of sunshine with more storms coming through. The latest instability data suggests a lesser threat for severe weather on Friday than previously thought, so the SPC has taken the area out of the SLIGHT Risk area they had yesterday. Still a few details to be hammered out with this next system, so we'll have to keep watch on it. We'll most likely see the remains of an MCS (mesoscale convective system --big 'ol line of thunderstorms) come through, but the elements aren't there for this thing to be terribly strong.

As this Friday system exits the area, it'll leave behind some showers for Saturday. Sunday and Monday is when the sun will come out for a good while and temperatures will stay in the mid 70's.

3/16 - 4:30pm - The Sun is Out!

After a few days without seeing the sun, clouds are clearing and brighter days are ahead! With this sunlight, temperatures will skyrocket into the 70's for both Tuesday and Wednesday. We should top out at 72 tomorrow, with 75 possible for Wednesday. As always, there's a price to pay for this nice weather, usually in the form of a cold front and thunderstorms. Compared to last week's temperature drop, this one won't be so bad. Storms will come through on Wednesday night with the cold front and temperatures should only top out in the mid 50's for Thursday, which isn't too bad. Severe weather shouldn't be an issue due to the late night passage of the storms and the lack of instability and shear present.

The sun will be back out for Friday, with a high near 60. We'll rise through the mid 60's during the weekend, which will be dry this time around.

March is Severe Weather Preparedness Month in Kentucky. Louisville's National Weather Service office has put together a nice page going over safety tips and tools you can use this Spring as severe weather cranks up in our area. Here's an interesting fact about tornadoes from the site:
Most often tornadoes travel around 30 mph but are capable of going 70 mph or are even capable of standing still.

10/30 - 8pm - 70s are BACK!

After some chilly weather this week, upper 60s and even lower 70s are making a comeback in the forecast! Expect us to top out at 70 tomorrow with sunny skies. Highs around 68-72 should hold for the weekend and well into next week. The change up will occur late next week as a cold front sweeps through the east and wipes out our 70s. Rain chances should head upward as this front passes as well.

The Halloween forecast for tomorrow looks spook-tacular, with dry conditions and that 70 degree high I talked about.

The first October snow since 1934 has hit London, England... click here. This begs the question: How wild will our winter be? Find out on Saturday evening when I present a special winter-preview forecast video!

5/16 - 3:30pm - One More Shot of Rain

It was nice to see the sun again today! We topped out at .36" of rain at my house since midnight and temperatures are holding in the mid-60's. More rain on the way tomorrow afternoon into tomorrow evening. After that we'll see a small daily chance of rain until mid-week, when sunshine and near 80 degree weather takes hold. That's a pretty good forecast I'd say.

I've been watching the GFS to see if the calm pattern in the Plains is ever going to break. As I said yesterday, it's looking more and more like late next week into the week after that look mighty good in terms of severe weather. Multiple troughs are going to go through starting late next week, meaning severe chances go up! These troughs will bring the lift and instability needed to support a severe weather outbreak, coupled with good upper-level winds. Things could get really interesting while I'm out there.

Only 8 days left!

A Lull in Excitement

Hmm... What do I say? There's rain/flurries Tuesday through Saturday, temperatures holding in the low 40's and upper 30's, and not a lick of sunshine. Talk about depression folks! I heard on the radio that today (Jan 22) is the most depressing day of the year as calculated by a group of scientists. Well, they're right. Not a drop of snow (accumulating) for at least a week! I don't know if I can live with myself that long...

Anyway, there is a chance of a pretty good storm brewing in the area of Feb 2-5 based on current weather model soundings. It's been waffling worse than the griddles at Waffle House, but nonetheless there is SOMETHING on the maps. At this point, I can't estimate time, placement, temperature, or even amount of snow for that matter! Something working for us though is cold air, and a load of it. Temperatures are supposed to get into the 20's and 10's for highs next week, which exponentially increases our chances for any snow. That means we can avoid an embarrassing busted snow forecast due to warm temperatures. It always seems we are just 1 degree away from snow here, so 20's for highs is a welcome change. At the moment the eggs, flour, and sugar are ready to make snow brownies, we just need a mixer to come and make it happen. I can assure you that my tone will lighten up by Friday as we peer into next week's snow possibilities, but now there's not much to say...
